It has taken me a long open-close at work to congest all that I need to say about this very day. The acknowledgment of pride weekend/week/month/life holds an ENORMOUS place in my heart. Not only do I identify with the LGBTQ+ community, but I also promote, dedicate part of my career, and hold a major alliance with it. I want to begin by first acknowledging our elders within this community, as they are the ones who have fought the hardest for the rights we live up to today. After much scholarly and personal research I have done on LGBTQ+ elders alone, I’d like to recognize that we truly only hold our Pride parades today because of the sad and vicious Stonewall Riots that existed years ago. Let us remember the times where “homosexuality” and (still) “gender dysmorphia” were legit diagnostics in the DSM. Without the harm, hatred, and non-acceptance that our elders had to have experienced... we wouldn’t be living in the (slight) acceptance that we experience today. With that, let us stand together today as our queer, kinky, polyamorous, BDSM, bicurious, bisexual, lesbian, gay, straight, monogamous, trans, cis, androgynous, pansexual, asexual, pan-romantic, aromatic, non-binary, drag, cross-dresser, two-spirit selves - as humans who share a similar experience. Whether you identify as one of these or none of these, I promise you share a humanistic experience as someone who does. Whether it be your gender or your sexuality, please remember that it is what is UNIQUE to us that makes us cool and awesome in this world. So often we get caught up in being the same copy and pastes as one another. When we remember what makes us unique, AND CHOOSE TO SHARE THAT WITH THE REST OF HUMANITY, our world shines a little bit brighter.
