I currently volunteer my time at "The Gathering Place," which tends to hold a very special place in my heart and life. This is a non-profit organization that offers a safe place for women and transgender women who are living in extreme poverty and/or are homeless. Most shelters around the city of Denver, CO (where I live) are only open from around 6 pm - 6 am, leaving the homeless no where to go during the daytime. Fortunately to say, The Gathering Place is that somewhere to go. This organization offers GED programs, job coaching classes, English and writing classes, a closet with interview-appropriate clothes, a pantry with an awesome allowance, a computer lab for anything one may desire to do with a computer ( as long as it's appropriate), telephones, clean bathrooms, safe napping rooms, child day care during their visit, and most importantly, food for their stomachs! I personally love this organization so so much because they give people options, and allow them to choose different outfits, different pantry items, what they want to do on the computers, whoever they want to call, different meal options, you name it. It's these little things that matter to these people, and showing up in the morning to volunteer my time servicing them means the world to their hearts.
If you haven't gone out into your community and at least seen what the other side of humanity goes through, I strongly encourage you to do so, as not only will it fill your heart, but it will fill the world's.
